Cold Sores vs. Canker Sores

A Dental Focus on Cold Sores
Although both canker sores and cold sores appear on or inside the mouth, there are significant differences between the two. First, a canker sore happens inside the mouth. It appears as a small white or grey area caused by biting the inside of the cheek or other minor trauma. Canker sores may last up to a couple weeks, but are not contagious. Cold sores, on the other hand, appear on the outside of the mouth. They are typically swollen, red blisters on the lips that last about a week. Unlike canker sores, cold sores are contagious. If you detect a canker sore or cold sore that looks suspicious or does not heal within the typical healing period, consult your dentist immediately.
